Chinese Senior Art Class

had my exhibition for my Chinese senior art class today. It was exhausting putting up all the work, because I pretty much did it without much help. It was a very rough and raw space as you can tell from the photos, but the work sang. It was a wonderful 6 month gig with some of the sweetest people I have ever known.

Giacometti at the Guggenheim.

This is a stunning and graceful large scale retro of one of the leading artists of the 20th Century that I found moving and exciting. The show covers his work from his surreal pieces, but for some reason The Palace at 4 AM from 1932 is missing. Maybe the Moma wasn't in the mood to lend it. This was a work that inspired me when a teenager seeing it at the modern, but don't worry there is plenty of great works here. Of course he is best known for his long thing figurative works of men and women who looked haunted and hunted and they come in all shapes and sizes including some very small ones. The materials range from plaster to bronze and are very much hands on works, his of course, but I do wish I could feel them up, after all they are full of sex and desire. There is not much variety or experimentation in his work, he found his niche and repeated it over and over for his entire career which is fine, but I do have a fondness for his early surreal work. The installation is as I said graceful and roomy and light. There are many examples of his paintings, maybe too many and they become redundant but his textures and line work are usually compelling, there's just too many of them, and they thin out when compared to his compelling sculptures. Still this is a wonderful exhibition that I think most artists will love. Its on through September 12 and beware of the crowds of tourists and the ladies who lunch.
