The Whitney and the art also the guards and the chelsea market
The Whitney show "Sixties Surreal" is worth a look because of the wide range of artists shown, many of whom I had never heard of, so that alone makes it worth seeing. As usual with these kind of exhibits some of the work left me cold and some were surprising and good. I went yesterday, the last day for member's preview so it was not crowded and we had lots of room to roam. Also as usual with these pointed shows, the curators try to cover a lot of ground and sometimes the ground was wet and soggy with their choices and views. There's a lot of political art hey its the sixties man and protest was everywhere. The odd thing that me and my friend Dina noticed well more than noticed was the over friendliness of some of the guards. Is this a new thing? Two guards, a man and woman, made conversation with us over many things including some of the art and their talking to us got a little weary after 10 minutes or so. They were both nice for sure, but they wouldn't let us go, actually the young man was sweet pleasant and handsome , even though he thought Jules Verne was a woman and the woman guard got pretty political about certain things. We were both amazed at this kind of encounter, as I have never had long talks with museum guards, and afterwards I thought maybe this was this a new thing that the museum is trying? Get to know your local museum guards and to make them more human or maybe they were just bored which I could certainly understand. We both felt a little uncomfortable. I knew so many of the artists shown on a personal level that Dina said I should write a book since I had many stories about them that I told her as we went from art work to art work. After we went over to the Chelsea Market, which neither of us have ever been to, and I won't be returning for another visit anytime soon, probably never. It was jam packed with tourists, noisy and hot and it was not easy to find a place to sit and eat. I felt like I was in Atlantic City or Las Vegas. The sandwich that we shared was ok, the waitress was sweet and attentive and the coffee was luke warm, but the ice cold water was very welcomed.
