War and Pieced: The Annette Gero Collection of Quilts from Military Fabrics. American Folk Art Museum

On this spring fall day in my city that I love I took in this small but stunning exhibition of Quilts made by mostly unknown soldiers of the British army dating back to the 1850’s. The title of the show is a little too cute, but the quilts are stunning, bold and colorful, with red being a main color used because of the military uniforms that were mainly red and that became scraps for the soldiers to use along with other bits and pieces of fabrics that were at hand and made under utmost duress that one could imagine, by mostly badly wounded soldiers who did them as therapy. I would have liked the exhibit to be brighter (installation lights) but probably the dim lighting has to do with the fragile state of the quilts. However they look like they were made yesterday and the installation itself is splendid with non intrusive black tape marks on the floor in front of the quilts to keep us a safe distance from them but still giving us good up close viewing. Inspiring in its beauty and lack of pretentious endeavor, these geometrical (for the most part) works should make anyone viewing them happy that they exist. It will be up until January so plenty of time to take it in.
