Top Of The Lake

Just finished this quirky but compelling 6 hour mini series about a young female detective who comes back to her small town in New Zealand of all places to take care of her dying mother and gets caught up in a serious situation involving a 12 year old girl who is pregnant by who we don't know and who then disappears, and sets all sorts of things (mostly bad) in motion. Co-written with direction by Jane Campion who throws in a good dose of the absurd  along with  disturbing characters and situations. It is twisty and some of it is obvious (my traumatic experience was worse than yours)  but never dull, and the accents can be daunting (there is a subtitle option available). For me the most arresting thing about the series is the performance of the great Elisabeth Moss who proves that there is indeed life after"Mad Men" this is a great performance and you can't take your eyes off this great actress, thats how fantastic she is. Also in the cast is Holly Hunter playing weird and some tough and scary villains led by Peter Mullan who is also very  good and hateful, Budd Boetticher, Sam Fuller and Anthony Mann would have loved this guy. Can't really say much more without giving stuff away. Definitely not for everyone but if you like your movies tangy and spicy then this is one for you.
