R.I.P. Breno Mello (1931-2008) & Marpessa Dawn (1934-2008)

The two beautiful stars of Marcel Camus's 1959 Magnificent film based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and set in Rio's carnival died 41 days apart. The film is one of my all time favorites, and is notable for its lush color cinematography and its great musical score by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa. If you've never seen this great film it is available in a stunning DVD from Criterion.

Just saw this film for the first time. So touching. So tragic. Breno and Marpessa were brilliant! Hard to believ this eas filmed a year before I was born, and that now they are both gone. Life is fleeting.
